President's Message

Welcome To The 2007 - 2008 season!

Your GCBOA Board of Directors are currently engaged in wide spread planning activity to insure that we have the ability to have a terrific basketball season this coming year.  Below are some of the details associated with this work and some of the emerging outcomes.

Notably, you're presently viewing our new website.  This is a 'work in progress' being designed to be a user friendly tool to easily learn about what is occurring with our association, and links to quickly and easily complete required tasks, such as registering annually.

We need officials - please make it a priority to think about individuals you know that may have an interest and ability to become basketball officials.  Please invest the time to ask them to consider officiating.  If you'd like, give their contact information to a Board member and we'll speak to them about the benefits of officiating and being a member of the GCBOA.

Finally, please check back to our website as a matter of routine; it will be a dynamic site intended to keep us all current on what's going on with our association.

Your Board of Directors are privileged to serve at the pleasure of our membership, please give us feedback as to how we're doing as well as what you'd like to see considered to do differently.  Our prime objectives remain helping our members become the best that they can be, thus providing our schools the best officiating possible for their student athletes and coaches.

Please review below regarding our current activities, and please feel free to communicate with me or any Board member regarding our association.

Thanks and regards,

John Ask

  • Moved website to ISP with annual savings and increased capabilities
  • Established calendar (established critical dates listing), meeting dates & location for next season
  • Summer Clinic - North Port High School - June 26, 27, 28 (Norm Weber managing)
  • Collaborated with 5A Schools & Coral Coast Officials Association
  • Creating mentoring program
  • Creating rules, mechanics, philosophy curriculum
  • Recruiting new members, contacting former members to consider officiating again
  • Met with selected schools in planning for next year; specifically this includes seeking to balance days of the weeks that games are played

Consideration For By-Laws Modifications:

  • Present language limits instruction to 30 minutes per meeting; the Board recommends that the By-Laws be silent on this topic.
  • Present language states that the first/organizational meeting of the year be in September; the Board recommends that this be modified to August (FHSAA has modified seasons since this original language)
  • Present language states that meetings shall occur during alternate weeks of January and February; the Board recommends that the By-Laws be silent on these required dates.
  • Present language requires a specific January meeting for creating a nominating committee; the Board recommends omitting this sentence; nominations and the election of officers remain in January and February annually.
  • Present language does not take into account the ability to vote electronically; the Board recommends that the ability to vote via fax and email become an option.
